How not to argue
How many times have you seen a good meeting dissolve into blaming, shaming, and cruelty? Arguing is not inherently bad; but we have become horrible at it. Arguing over which idea is the most likely to advance a company, or improve a situation, can be one of the most important aspects of a team. It is a sign that people trust each other, and they feel safe. Today, most arguments do not advocate for truth.
Most argue for power every day in offices and chat rooms across the country, with an end goal of being declared victor. The prevalence of hybrid work environments requires leadership to enforce higher standards. Arguments over ideas should be encouraged. Arguments that become personal must be stopped immediately. A Professor in college had a sign on his door that said audi alteram partem; which means “listen to the other guy.” Different ideas and opinions over work will not hurt you. Keep your team focused on the task and emphasize the importance of treating each person’s ideas with respect.
