It’s not about the money

From the moment I started working at JK Moving, it was clear the culture and values embraced by the company’s leadership were part of the daily operations.  Every time I watched a group of new hires start at the company; they sat down for an initial welcoming with HR.  The founder of the company was there to personally greet them every single time.  He was at the morning meetings to ensure the drivers were properly supported before dispatching, which was frequently before 6AM!  The company’s values, and its culture, were set from day 1.  They were reinforced every single day by the company leadership team.  Nobody went home from work without a feeling of support from the highest levels of leadership.  When many transportation companies reported a shortage of drivers, I never saw one at JK Moving.

If your company is struggling with staffing a critical role, do not avoid a close examination of your company’s values and culture.  Focus on how your team experiences them, not the way you report them to outside stakeholders.  Compensation is seldom the reason your staff begin looking at outside job opportunities.  That only becomes an issue when they already have one foot out the door.

Do your team members have an everyday experience that is consistent with the public image of the company?  Can you afford not to know?
