There is no use in being upset over situations that have already happened and cannot be changed. While most leaders I have met understand this, they also fail to ask the most important follow up question. “Is it possible that we could have seen this problem coming?” Asking this question is not a sign of weakness, and it should never induce fear of losing a job. It’s a great question. Key performance indicators should indicate if something is wrong. They are supposed to alert executives if they need to reallocate resources needed to get ahead of the problem. If your KPI’s do not facilitate these decisions and actions, they are worse than useless.
